There are some obvious downsides of operating as a player. You will have no control over your team's operations, including trades or releases (although your job is guaranteed). If you play as a real NFL player, you'll be forced to retire when that player finishes his 15th season, at which point he'll automatically retire. That means if you're playing as a veteran, you'll only get a handful of seasons in his cleats, at which point you'll need to create a new character to continue playing.
