Some people viewed these characters as being added to pad out the Sonic games with the same levels and areas with slower mechanics and as such hated them for it. Another reason for their hatred is that there's just so many of them. Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces featured almost all of them and none of them had any reason to be there. So they essentially vary from either being there to pad out a game's length or being there for basically no reason, neither of which are really all that great for fans.
