Does Madden 20 have a relocation option?

On the downside, it appears Madden 20 still won't allow relocation or create-a-team options. There are two reasons these omissions are so egregious. First, older Madden games had this feature, but it was removed years ago and still hasn't returned. Second, the sports video game series with the best franchise mode, NBA 2K, offers both options. Many fans have called for these options from EA in Madden, but it hasn't happened.

What is franchise mode in NFL?

In Franchise Mode, a human player may choose to Be a Player for any available team (unless restricted by a commissioner in an online league). You can take control of a single player, whether a real NFL player or a custom-made rookie, and play out his career in the pros. This mode is an exciting way to play due to how fast games go because by default plays are simulated rather than shown in-engine on screen. You can play as any defensive position or most offensive positions. You cannot play as a kicker, punter, or anyone on the offensive line.

What are the downsides of being a player?

There are some obvious downsides of operating as a player. You will have no control over your team's operations, including trades or releases (although your job is guaranteed). You'll also have no control over the game when you're off the field, so even if you do an amazing job on your side of the ball, the AI may perform badly and put you in an unnecessarily difficult situation. In other words, it's just like being a singular player for any real sports team.

How to earn XP if you are not the starter?

When playing as a player, your only job is to excel. If you're not the starter (which the AI calculates solely on your character's overall rating compared to others on the same position), you need to earn your spot by doing weekly training. You need to train even when you are the starter for bonus XP, but if you don't train when you're not the starter, you'll never get any playing time. Note that the league commissioner can enable the "Instant Starter" setting to make sure all human-controlled player-characters are at the top of their team's depth chart regardless of overall ratings.

Why is the draft position important?

The archetype and draft position are important because it sets your character's starting attributes. All the information is displayed on-screen and is self-explanatory; be sure to choose an archetype that fits your play style. The draft position selection is more of a soft difficulty mode, as being drafted early gives high starting attributes, while being undrafted gives you very fast XP gain during games and training. These are the only two choices that affect your character's starting attributes.

When do you retire from the NFL?

If you play as a real NFL player, you'll be forced to retire when that player finishes his 15th season, at which point he'll automatically retire. That means if you're playing as a veteran, you'll only get a handful of seasons in his cleats, at which point you'll need to create a new character to continue playing.

Can you simulate training and still get gold XP?

If you play out the training and achieve a gold medal in a drill to get the maximum XP, then the next time that same drill comes up, you can just simulate the training and still get the gold XP amount. The highest medal you've earned will have a red square background so you know exactly what you're getting.

Introducing The Scenario Engine

Creating an impactful narrative experience in a franchise mode isn’t as easy as writing a linear story. Though you can use that format to great effect for a shorter experience, franchise modes are dynamic systems that deliver dramatically different results based on the decisions the user makes.

Scheme Fit System Changes

Last year’s major new franchise mode feature was the scheme fit system, a crude and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to replicate the idea that certain players perform and develop better in certain offensive and defensive schemes. Aspiring to capture this dynamic in franchise mode was admirable, but the execution left a lot to be desired.

Superstar Abilities Embolden The CPU Competition

For too many years, there has been too little player differentiation when playing CPU opponents.

The Future of Franchise Mode

Though I still have questions about the scheme fit system, the Scenario Engine and superstar abilities sound like promising steps in the right direction.

Superstar Abilities Embolden The CPU Competition

  • For too many years, there has been too little player differentiation when playing CPU opponents. Whether you were squaring off against a future hall-of-fame quarterback or a shell-shocked rookie, chances are they would complete a high percentage of short yardage passes and rarely do anything that mimicked the ability of their real-world counterparts. “I feel like with franchise, a lo…

But will EA Sports continue down this path moving forward, or reverse course and chase a different feature set next year? That danger always exists with sports titles, but Young says he has no plans to neglect franchise mode next …
